The RIF, a reliable choice in an uncertain world

The services provided by the RIF Office, anytime, anywhere: feedback on the COVID-19 crisis management.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a very strong impact on crew shifts and the repatriation of seafarers in 2020-2021.

Faced with challenges due to port closures, the RIF Office set up a crisis cell operating 24/24. With the support of the French diplomatic network, 3rd largest in the World, the French flag is an example of successful management of crew shifts and repatriations of seafarers.

For example, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, up to 3,500 seafarers per month transited via the French oversea territory, La Réunion (Indian Ocean), to be repatriated to their home countries.

Shipowners and trade unions unanimously expressed their satisfaction with the RIF Office, which demonstrated the effectiveness and relevance of the French maritime administration’s public service and the strength of France Maritime.
