Creation of CRAPEM

In 2021, France became the first country in the world to set up a permanent service (telephone line, teleconsultation, appointments on land) providing psychological care for seafarers.

The Resource centre for seafarers psychological support at sea (or in French Centre Ressource d’Aide Psychologique En Mer - CRAPEM), is a public service that
public service that provides access to care for all seafarers suffering from psychological problems and sedentary seafarers.

It is open to anyone with a one-off or regular need to meet with
professionals to deal with their psychological or relational problems. Those close to a person suffering from mental illness can also find information, advice, support or treatment.

Consultations can be given face-to-face or by telephone.

Missions of the CRAPEM

Assessment and care of seafarers, their families and sedentary maritime personnel.

Co-ordination of mental health care, disarmament and verbalisation of the suffering of seafarers and maritime rescue workers during events at sea.

Training and information on mental distress tailored to the specific needs of the maritime environment (e.g. identifying suicidal or traumatic crises, exhaustion, etc.).

Training for emergency medical and psychological staff on the specificities of the on-board clinic.

Support, advice and guidance for the various partner organisations.

The CRAPEM team

CRAPEM has a multi-professional team:

  • a psychiatrist;
  • a psychologist in charge of the CRAPEM;
  • a health executive;
  • a nurse coordinator specialising in suicide prevention and bereavement support;
    - several state-qualified CRAPEM coordinating nurses.
