Flag removal or freezing

This request is used to freeze the French flag (in the case of a foreign bareboat charter set) or to remove the French flag.

The following form shall be sent to the RIF Office

If the ship is mortgaged, it will be necessary to discharge the maritime mortgages beforehand, to be able to proceed with the removal of the French flag.

Request may be sent by email to the address rif@mer.gouv.fr.

As of 31/05/2021, for any ship removal request, a declaration specifying that the ship is not intended for recycling or, if it is the case, a declaration specifying that it is sent to a shipyard approved by the European Commission is required.
