Modification to the way time at sea is taken into account when issuing the advanced IGF certificate

The provisions set out in Articles 16 and 17 of the Order of 19 July 2017 on the issue of the qualifications required for service on board ships subject to the IGF Code have been amended by the Order of 4 September 2025 published on 20 September in the Journal Officiel. The articles have been amended as follows :

  • From 2 July 2022 until 1 July 2027 the service at sea and bunkering provided for in 4° and 5° of Article 6 of this Order may be carried out on board tankers for liquefied gases. In this case, additional training provided by the shipowner or his service provider and approved by the Minister for the Sea after consultation with the Inspector General for Maritime Education is required. One day’s service at sea on tankers carrying liquefied gases is then equivalent to 0.7 days’ service at sea required under 4° and 5° of Article 6 of this Order.
  • Until 1 July 2027, days spent on sea trials on vessels subject to the IGF Code, days spent in refit position and days spent in construction or repair yards prior to delivery of the vessel, as well as bunkering carried out during these periods, will be taken into account in full for the purposes of validating the sea service provided for in 4° of Article 6 of this Order and for the purposes of bunkering provided for in 5° of the same Article, subject to justification from the shipowner.
