Legal framework

Provisions on operation of ships and on their life-saving and safety equipment at sea, are determined based on the hull length (LH in French) by regulatory means.

The main reference text on the matter is the decree n ° 84-810 of August 30, 1984 on the safety of life at sea, pollution prevention, security and social certification of ships.

The latter is implemented through the order of November 23, 1987 on the safety of ships and prevention of pollution which includes, in appendix, Divisions 241, 242 and 245.
