1) Which tonnage level office is responsible for the vessel’s tonnage?

  • For a new vessel built in France, it is the tonnage level with jurisdiction for the building site;
  • For a new vessel built abroad it is the level office with jurisdiction for the selected home port, or for vessels anchored in Marseille and upon written request of the shipping company, the level office with jurisdiction for the registered office of the establishment.
  • For a second-hand vessel it is the Marseille tonnage level office or, upon written request of the shipping company, either the level office for the selected home port or, if this is Marseille, the level office of the location of the establishment.

2) What are the costs related to the tonnage of the vessel?
The tonnage and issuing of the tonnage certificates which are part of the public service are free of charge.
On the other hand, where the vessel tonnage service needs to be provided abroad, the corresponding costs are subject to a financial agreement between the requester and Customs inter-regional (regional) management associated with the competent tonnage office.
This agreement is part of the regulatory framework in force governing postings abroad of agents of the State.
An agreement of this type is also in force for postings between mainland and the French overseas territories, as well as between the overseas territories themselves.
